Personally ,nowadays, I think I would try and keep it simple when it would come to a older base station, The 2000's have become pains in the dairy airs for many but not for all, there were a lot of good low maintance radios out there like the 142s that you wouldn't have to worry about things going out on them as you would the 2000s some 25 years later or depending on how old the radio was in the first place. It's your time and your dime after the fact. Like I said before, the wonderful thing about a C-2000 is there's not a lot you need to do to them for them to sound very nice on the air. Power supplies getting weaker and weaker as time goes by, keying down and modulating you can pretty much see the piower dimming in all your light works in the radio, the way to tell this is to hook up a good 10 amp power supply to the dc side of the radio, if all lights up nice and healthy and stays that way after keying and modulating, that should be a pretty good indication about the on board power supply )-:, Freq counters going bannanas !!! there is a fix for some ,but most need new panels )-: now were talking a little cash if we can find one to replace it with. easy fix (-: new reg and your back in business. Over the years the basic things I've personally seen go wrong with those first was the AM voltage regulators go out on them, in other words, the AM side of the radio dies but SSB continues to work fine. 18 watts pep is about right 701, most AM/SSB CB radios should do about the same on AM and SSB (give or take a watt either way) it's great that you can run a power supply to yours to make it run (-: it could be a number of things why your internil is not working. Power supplies in those have been known to fail after years of service, The Cobra 2000 basically came out in 1979 and had a production run until 1993 ,parts are getting slightly harder to come by and can be exspensive when found, I always thought they were pretty radios and I must admit ,they performed very well. These should get you going on the right track if you need any frequency adjustments just post it here and ill help but i dont suggest messing with any vco's or cans unless you have the propper equipment or are absolutely sure about what you are doing you may also see and hear the rf power meter slamming the fullscale side after turning power settings up to avoid trashing that meter adjust VR6 for a safe fullscale reading. if you see light drastically dim then best thing to do if you insist the higher power output is to run that radio on an external power supply a 6-10 ampre is plenty and very reasonably priced and the radio will run smoother at pep. Dont cut anything alot of times it makes your sideband or modulation uncontrolably wide open heres what you need.VR7 AM MODULATION set this at 100%.VR11 SIDEBAND RF POWER generally they hit about 22-23 watts just set to 20 watts.VR10 AM RF POWER you need to watch this setting some of those power supplies were weak or just enough to run the radio even the sideband at 20 watts will draw on that power supply watch for lights dimming.
